This spindle design is an heirloom quality item designed for a lifetime of use. The photos show the one you will receive. Hand turned in 2019 by Jory Freyee with design by master craftsman Malcolm Fielding in the workshops of the Spindle Shop, Queensland, Australia. 100% Australian made, no parts are outsourced or made on copying machines. All products are tested and quality controlled.
The supported spindle shaft of this heirloom quality item is made in Dymondwood for durability, stability and long life. The tip is made from a titanium insert for extreme durability. The point is carefully shaped to be slightly rounded over to avoid damage and scratching to support surfaces, and to ensure really smooth spins at all angles.
The whorl is a saucer shape, hollowed on the top side. This design has a very long duration high speed spin characteristic. The balance has been tuned and perfected by insertion of nickel-silver pin weighting in the rim of the whorl as needed. The spindle has been tested both for static and dynamic balance.
The Drop spindle has a handmade sterling silver hook transverse hook terminal, that has been fine tuned for accurate centreing of the thread. The whorl has a handmade notch on the edge, that locates the thread to the back of the hook and gives a secure hold. Simply place the fibre by the catch pin and lead the thread into the hook (without winding around the centre of the spindle or hook. It is very quick and easy to re-locate the thread for the next spin.)
The Support Bowl has contrasting Dymondwood end grain insert in the centre is for extra hardness, smoothness and best spin, as well as decorative effect. The centres have a dimple to help keep the spindle in position as it is flicked, and the two sides of the surface have different profiles. One is more funnel shaped with a parabolic curve that will hold your spindle securely, and the reverse is shallower to allow use with different whorl shapes and tilt angles.
All cracks filled with a special strengthening product to ensure longevity. This support bowl is suitable for use with metal tipped spindles. The shallower face will accommodate ball bearing and rounded glass tips by other makers as well as my short tip Dervish styles, and the deeper well suits the Pu Yok style Tibetan, and all our standard Tibetan range and current Dervish and Dyavol styles.
The top point is a slender taper to a narrow point to allow the yarn to slip the tip easily. The bottom point is well defined and designed for an effortless long spin.
The spindles is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds durability.
All my spindles are tested before despatch and come with a free sample of our lovely fibres.
